Proposed CSA Changes Could Affect Your Operation

Earlier this year, The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) proposed what some would call “long-awaited” changes to the organization’s CSA program.

As most of us operating in this space know, CSA stands for "Compliance, Safety, Accountability," which is an initiative designed to improve road safety and reduce commercial motor vehicle-related crashes, injuries and fatalities.

The CSA program uses various data sources to evaluate the safety performance of motor carriers and drivers. The scores are based on seven Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASICs), which include:

  • Unsafe Driving
  • Hours-of-Service Compliance
  • Driver Fitness
  • Controlled Substances/Alcohol
  • Vehicle Maintenance
  • Cargo-Related
  • Crash Indicator

One of the proposed changes to the CSA program includes a shift in focus from a score-based system to a prioritization approach. Instead of assigning specific scores to carriers in various safety categories, the new approach aims to prioritize interventions based on the carriers' safety performance.

This means that rather than relying solely on a numerical score, the FMCSA is exploring ways to better identify and target carriers with the highest safety risk. The prioritization approach considers various factors and data points to determine which carriers may pose the most significant safety concerns.

What this may look like and how it could affect you is precisely what Aim Regional Safety Manager and expert, John Rugarber, will be talking about on Tuesday, November 21, at 10:00 AM (Eastern).
