Benefits of Leasing vs Buying

Leasing is becoming a more popular option compared to owning a vehicle, particularly among business owners. Managing a trucking fleet is overwhelming enough, but adding the additional upfront cost of owning a fleet of vehicles can significantly impact operations. There are several benefits with an Aim full-service lease, such as: lower monthly payments, administrative relief, worry-free maintenance and upkeep, and numerous equipment options tailored to your business.

Buying

  • Larger upfront investment
  • Capital tied up in vehicles
  • Unpredictable costs
  • Ongoing maintenance, repairs, and recruiting
  • Trade-in value fluctuation
  • Increasing equipment costs
  • Lack of qualified repair facilities
  • Fleet administration time and costs

Leasing

  • Smaller upfront investment
  • More capital for your core business
  • Predictable transportation costs
  • Licensing, permitting, and fuel tax reporting services included
  • Driver training and safety services to optimize your current operation
  • Access to state-of-the-art technologies
  • Miles-per-gallon optimization
  • Increased driver retention
  • Reduce service interruptions for customers

In most cases, a full-service lease yields more financial benefits than owning and maintaining your trucking fleet. With the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), leasing has become more attractive to businesses.

Tax Reform for Businesses - As a result of the TCJA, tax rates for most businesses have been reduced, which makes leasing even more beneficial.

Interest Expense - The deductibility of net interest expense has been limited from 100% to 30% of earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization through 2021; thereafter it will change to 30% of earnings before interest and taxes. (for 2019 and 2020 years only, the CARES Act increased percentage from 30% to 50%, however if there are no additional changes, for 2021, this would be 30% again)

Depreciation - The TCJA allows for the deduction of 100% of truck and trailer purchases through 2022; thereafter, the 100% deduction will be reduced by 20% each subsequent year, being completely removed beginning in 2027.

Like-Kind Exchange - Under previous tax laws, businesses could sell an asset while acquiring another without generating a tax liability on the asset being sold. This is eliminated under the TCJA.

The global push toward electric vehicles (EVs) to reduce carbon emissions grows every year with more businesses investing dollars and manpower in advancing technology. Over 20% of the country has already committed to the Advanced Clean Trucks Rule to shift transportation to EVs over the next several years. Additionally, many OEMs are making major commitments to developing EV trucks, meaning the future of Aim will include EVs as a part of our fleet.

While the nation’s infrastructure cannot yet accommodate driving an EV across the country, great advancements are being made to both the vehicles and charging stations needed to power them along their journey. As the industry nears fully adopting electric trucks, Aim is actively working with the industry’s top brands to ensure we’re ready when you’re ready to make the switch to electric or other alternative fuel sources.
